We are pleased to announce that we have become an accredited Living Wage Employer. The Living Wage is an hourly rate which is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK. It is updated annually and measured independently, and is notably higher than the national minimum wage set by the government. So, while the current national minimum wage is £6.31, the UK Living Wage for outside of London is currently £7.65. The Living Wage campaign has been running for ten years and has lifted over 45,000 people out of poverty.
Rhys Moore, Director of the Living Wage Foundation says that “The benefits the Living Wage brings to staff and business are clear.” This sentiment is backed up by an independent study of the benefits for businesses of implementing a Living Wage policy which found that employers in London reported the following:
– 80% believe that the Living Wage had enhanced the quality of the work of their staff
– absenteeism had fallen by approximately 25%
– 66% reported a significant impact on recruitment and retention within their organisation
– 70% felt that the Living Wage had increased consumer awareness of their organisation’s commitment to be an ethical employer
For us at Channel View Publications this means that everyone, from those of us employed directly by the company to the reception staff and cleaners that we share with other companies in our building, receive a Living Wage.
